Stanley Forsythe runs the most profitable division of Davidson Enterprises, a pharmaceutical distribution company. Operating with little oversight out of Livonia, Michigan, he generates more earnings in one quarter than the other three divisions combined. Charlie Thomas, director of purchasing for the company, is suspicious of Stanley’s remarkable success (“Stanley operates in the shadows of the grey market”). When Davidson Enterprises is sold to New Wind Pharma, Charlie is sent by her retiring boss to Livonia to manage inventory and compliance. She and Stanley quickly butt heads, as she expected, but the more she learns about Stanley’s business operations, the more she suspects his transactions aren’t just unethical but illegal. Charlie was raised by her father to let no man take advantage of her—so, even when an intruder breaks into her new home in Michigan and attacks her, she refuses to back down. As multiple investigations by the DEA and the state of California circle Stanley and his cohorts, Charlie may be the key to taking him down. This fast-paced thriller excels at making federal investigations and boardroom meetings both exciting and easy to parse. The plot weaves a complicated web detailing every level of the national drug laundering scheme, from the corporate offices to the truck drivers told to make mysterious stops in exchange for anonymous envelopes filled with cash. The story switches locations so often that it occasionally loses sight of Charlie as a protagonist, but the ending is centered around her. Although one choice she makes could use more examination, it’s satisfying to follow her as she successfully outmaneuvers her foes after taking a few knocks. The pacing is excellent, with just enough plot twists and slower moments to maintain tension.
